(Re)Utilizing Transportation Infrastructure for Parks and Public Space

Panel Dialogue

This panel dialogue will discuss innovative projects that redefine urban spaces utilizing both old and new transportation infrastructure, providing more sustainable and inviting community amenities.

Panelists will explore how transportation infrastructure can be transformed into vibrant community spaces and how parks can become catalysts for inclusive, resilient, and thriving cities.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Recognize how transportation infrastructure can be transformed into vibrant community spaces, and how this can lead to more sustainable and inclusive cities.
  • Identify ways in which planning processes, policies, and priorities can either support or constrain the capacity for infrastructure adaptation and the implications of this for urban innovation and environmental resilience.
  • Outline different social, economic, physical, and political approaches to project delivery, and understand how these impact policy development and implementation.
  • Describe the role that private philanthropy and community support can play in shaping new parks, and how context-sensitive infrastructure projects can help mitigate the negative impact of infrastructure on parks and urban communities.
  • Discuss strategies for ensuring that new parks are relevant to audiences traditionally underrepresented in national parks, and under-served in their access to urban parks and nature.
