Running While Black

Cohort Peer Conversation

Join endurance athlete, activist, and mental health advocate Alison Mariella Désir and City Parks Alliance Co-Chair Mitchell Silver (formerly planning director for Raleigh and parks commissioner for New York City, who also served as the first Black president of the American Planning Association), for a discussion about her book Running While Black.

While the book is about finding freedom of running, Désir insightfully and powerfully exposes the reality of running in public space as a Black woman and shares fears and emotions that remain a reality in a white-dominated society. Her vividly described stories once again exposed the dilemma many people of color face between navigating a love of the outdoors with the added burden of being forced to confront your color.
