A native New Yorker with a background in journalism and community organizing, Joan joined The Trust for Public Land’s NYC Playgrounds Program in 2007. During her tenure, she has overseen site selection, capital requests, city and agency partnerships, design review, and community engagement at over 95 playground renovations, including 16 green infrastructure sites funded by the Department of Environmental Protection. Joan is currently engaged in building out a strategy to scale green schoolyards programs nationally. She has been a contributing author of a green schoolyard best practices manual and training courses in participatory design, community engagement, and schoolyard stewardship.
