Michael Nichols

Executive Director at Esplanade Association

Michael Nichols has led the Esplanade Association as executive director since 2017 and directs the organization’s work to revitalize, enhance, maintain and program the 64-acre Charles River Esplanade in downtown Boston.

Prior to joining the Esplanade Association, Michael served as Chief of Staff at the Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy, and in various law and policy roles in city and state government.

Michael’s data and policy-focused approach have led the Esplanade Association to initiate sector-leading climate preparedness and sustainability planning efforts while also moving the organization forward on innovative earned revenue programs, DEIA practices, arts & culture partnerships, and improvements to the public-private-partnership model in Massachusetts state parks.

Michael also worked to secure the first long-term PPP funding agreement for the Greenway Conservancy that served to establish Boston’s second business improvement district solely to support funding for the popular park.
