Kay Sykora was the founding Executive Director of the Manayunk Development Corporation (MDC), managing the group for 18 years. Starting in 2006, Ms. Sykora moved into the role of Director of Destination Schuylkill River, with a primary focus on the Schuylkill Waterfront, trails, and watershed. Projects include trails, the Manayunk Bridge, Venice Island Recreation and Performance Center, and extensive greening and art projects. Long-term planning with residents was done for the overall waterfront, Shawmont waterfront, Shawmont residential area, and Germany Hill. Much of the planning was incorporated into the city of Philadelphia’s Lower Northwest Plan. Ms. Sykora helped to secure some funding and also to help foster volunteer work with tools and greening. The overarching goal for all of the work has been to work with the community, including schools, neighborhoods, and business interests to improve the quality of life for the community.
Most recently, Ms. Sykora participated in working with the Roxborough Manayunk Conservancy in planning around how to enhance community greenspace, watersheds and helping to bring environmental education into our schools.
